Similar to physical therapists, complementary therapists, hypnotherapists, beauty therapists, and massage therapists, aromatherapists need insurance. Insurance will help you provide services with more confidence. It might even be required for licensing purposes, depending on where you’re working.
Aromatherapist insurance is the specialty insurance product you need. This consists of different insurance policies that grant protection against legal liabilities, commercial losses, workplace injuries, and other exposures. Read this guide to know how much is aromatherapy insurance, how it works, where to get the best coverage, and compare quotes online.

Scents can alleviate and improve the conditions of your clients. But at the same time, they can result in sickness or even aggravate an existing illness.
For example, ylang-ylang essential oil and rose essential oil have strong scents. These may aggravate the symptoms of clients who have asthma and other lung-related problems.
Basically, you can be held liable if your aromatherapy treatment caused more harm than good. And so, it’s good to get aromatherapy liability insurance that’s usually available in the form of a general liability policy. Use the table above to compare the general liability insurance of companies we recommend.
General liability insurance grants a shield against claims for bodily injuries or property damage. Here are concrete examples where this type of aromatherapy business insurance is useful:
A client slips and falls by stepping on a spilled essential oil on the floor
A client experiences shortness of breath or dizziness during an aromatherapy session
You stained the client’s clothing with essential oils
Is bodily injuries and property damage the only exposure covered by general liability insurance? The answer is no. Nowadays, the general liability insurance for aromatherapists and other health practitioners such as reflexologists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists comes with these add-ons:
Products and completed operations coverage
Advertising injury coverage
Rented premises liability coverage
Hired/non-owned auto liability coverage
Public liability insurance covers claims for bodily injuries or property damage. In the USA, this is offered as part of general liability insurance. In the UK, public liability insurance is sold as a stand-alone policy that can be bundled with cyber liability, commercial property, and other business insurance policies.

Aromatherapists like you owe each client a duty of care. This means that you can be held responsible if a client sustains injuries during a treatment because of mistakes and oversights. Mistakes and oversights are exposures that general liability insurance can’t cover.
Since general liability insurance isn’t enough, add a professional liability policy to your aromatherapist insurance package. Use the table above to compare the professional liability insurance of the companies we recommend.
Professional liability insurance takes care of defense costs, settlements, and court judgments.
You can use this to cover claims for actual or alleged negligence, violation of good faith, violation of fair dealing, breach of contract, breach of confidentiality, etc. Here are some concrete situations where professional liability insurance is helpful:
You failed to ask a client about any existing bodily conditions before conducting the aromatherapy session. As a result, the client displayed problematic reaction to the essential oils used
You advised a client to use a particular essential oil to improve asthma. However, there are no medical studies or even proven reports that such essential oil has the desired effect. Because of this, the client filed a claim
Since aromatherapy sometimes involves body contact, professional liability insurance for aromatherapists comes with sexual abuse and molestation coverage. Another inclusion is HIPAA claims coverage that’s useful if you ask clients to give their medical records.

An aromatherapy business is one of those businesses that need a commercial space, such as an office, clinic, spa, or healthcare facility, to run well.
When you own or rent a commercial building as an aromatherapist, it follows that you get commercial property insurance. This is very important as essential oils are flammable and can cause a fire.
Use the table above to compare the commercial property insurance of companies we recommend.
Commercial property insurance will recover financial losses and help you continue as if nothing happened if your aromatherapy business’s clinic, office, spa, or healthcare facility gets damaged or destroyed because of:
Fire
Theft
Vandalism
Civil commotion
Weather
Lighting
Sinkhole collapse
Volcanic action
Vehicle
Aircraft
Impact
Falling objects
Sprinkler leakage
The building isn’t the only property covered by commercial property insurance. Properties such as electric generators, blending sets, diffusers, beakers, office furniture, papers and records, appliances, and other valuables inside the building are also covered.
Commercial property insurance isn’t foolproof. It comes with exclusions. It doesn’t grant coverage against commercial losses caused by earthquakes, floods, mudslides, and war.
Note that if you have multiple aromatherapy businesses, there’s no need to get separate commercial property insurance for each. Most insurance companies allow you to cover multiple business locations in one commercial property insurance policy.

Blending kits, beakers, diffusers, and other tools you use for aromatherapy can’t only be insured by commercial property insurance. Tools and equipment insurance also takes care of these items.
Use the table above to compare the tools and equipment insurance of companies we recommend.
Tools and equipment insurance covers costs if something happens to your aromatherapy equipment while they’re in the premises and outside of the premises of your business. Coverage applies when damage, loss, or destruction is caused by:
Fire
Theft
Vandalism
Malicious mischief
Operator error
Impact
Electrical shorts
Mechanical breakdown
Just like the other policies we previously discussed, tools and equipment insurance also comes with exclusions. It doesn’t provide coverage for the resulting out-of-pocket expenses caused by normal wear and tear.

A business owner’s policy is the best option for insuring a growing aromatherapy business. This insurance is basically a combination of general liability and commercial property insurance. That said, a business owner’s policy grants quick and comprehensive coverage against commercial losses and legal liabilities
Use the table above to compare the business owner’s policy of insurance companies we recommend.
To get ahead with the competition, some aromatherapy insurance companies allow their business owner’s policy to have add-ons. For example, NEXT’s business owner’s policy for aromatherapists can be added with workers' compensation insurance with optional employer’s liability coverage.
Consider getting workers' compensation insurance if you employ one or more people. If your associates get injured or sick because of work, workers' compensation insurance will cover the cost of treating them, providing the required medicines, enrollment fees to the rehabilitation center, lost wages, and in case of death, funeral expenses and allowance to dependents.
Cost per Month | Cost per Year | Deductible | |
---|---|---|---|
General liability insurance | $19 | $228 | $0-$500 |
Professional indemnity insurance | $30 | $360 | $500-$1,000 |
Commercial property insurance | $40 | $480 | $1,000 |
Business owner’s policy | $59 | $708 | $1,000 |
Workers compensation insurance | $55 | $660 | $2,000-$5,000 |
The average aromatherapy insurance cost is $19 per month or $228 per year for a $1 million general liability insurance. This assumes that your aromatherapy business has 5 employees and makes $500,000 or less per year. Factors that affect the cost of premiums are:
Business history
Claims history
Number of employees
Location
Policy limits and deductibles
In connection, here’s another table that shows how much the best aromatherapy insurance companies charge for their $1 million general liability insurance:

This place is an absolute joke of a company and should be ashamed of the way they conduct business. I was hurt on the job at the end of July and it took them just shy of 7 weeks to issue out a paycheck to me. Yes the amount was back dated but still. Not many have the luxury of not receiving a paycheck for almost 2 months. To top it all off, the original adjuster marked me down for the wrong state which caused a problem from the get go, I've had 3 different adjusters now since each one can't seem to figure out the simplicity of my claim. All my paperwork which includes, my job, house, and drs visits all are from the same state and city but yet some how I have been filed under a completely different state 1500 miles away. They do not answer your phone calls or emails no matter how many you leave. I've had to escalate my frustrations to the supervisors of each of these individuals in order to even get some kind of response. I've had more communication and information given to me about my claim from the customer service representatives then the actual adjusters.......... please tell me how that works?! A serious overhaul needs to happen here in order to serve your clients the way they deserve to be taken care of. 10/10 do not recommend this company to a single soul on earth
I have never had the displeasure of working with a more incompetent and disrespectful person in my life. I’m an injured worker and the adjuster that was assigned to my case was named Carrie Furgeson. In the past 6 weeks that I’ve been injured and out of work I have only been able to get ahold of her twice, not for lack of trying. I have left countless voicemails, countless emails, and she ignores them all. When I am finally able to get ahold of her I’m greeted with terrible customer service. She is rude, she talks over me and I’m hardly able to get a word in edgewise. She spelled my name wrong on my documents even after I spelled it for her properly countless times, this caused a whole new issue with my bank. I have bill collectors from the hospital calling me demanding payment and Carrie Furgeson won’t do a single thing to help, or to get them paid. All of my documentation is in Colorado, my job is in Colorado, my address is in Colorado, all my Dr offices and appointments have been in Colorado and Carrie still managed to hold my claim because she wasn’t sure what state she needed to file it under. It’s been 6 weeks since my Injury and my company still hasn’t received the wage paperwork to fill out so they can get me my correct wages. When she’s not ignoring me she’s answering my questions with “I don’t know” well I don’t know how she got this job, because apparently she doesn’t know anything about it. She is a disgusting morose individual inside and out and I genuinely wish her the worst in all of her future endeavors. I highly recommend you don’t use this company. Please if you are a business owner and your looking into this company please don’t use them. I’m sure they have the cheapest payment and that’s why companies use them in the first place, but you will be doing your employees a grave disservice by forcing them to venture into this absolute dumpster fire of a company. I would rate 0/5 if possible but 1 was the lowest I was allowed.
