Transporting horses from the horse farm to any other location is better done through a horse trailer than an enclosed trailer.
An enclosed trailer might seem to work. However, it doesn’t have the sturdiness and spaciousness of a horse trailer, which mitigates the possibility of the horses getting stressed and injured during the trip.
Horse trailers are expensive. Moreover, they’re bulky and can easily cause accidents while on the road. This is why, unlike utility trailers which you can use without insurance, horse trailers must be insured.
Horse trailer insurance is a standalone insurance product consisting of policies that grant protection if your horse trailer causes an accident, gets damaged, gets stolen, or breaks down. Here’s a guide that will answer all of your questions.
A common inclusion in horse trailer insurance programs is a commercial auto policy. You initially purchase this as a cover for the vehicle which is towing your horse trailer. However, there’s no stopping you from adding the horse trailer as an insured item. There are many uses for a commercial auto policy. Allow us to break them down one by one:
Commercial auto insurance comes with an auto liability coverage that pays the medical treatment of third parties who sustains injuries because of your horse trailer. Here are some examples where this kicks in:
Your horse trailer detaches from the vehicle, swerves on the road, and hits a car
Your horse trailer hits a pedestrian while you’re reversing
Your horse trailer is poorly maintained. One of its parts loosens up and hits a pedestrian or a vehicle
A trailer endorsement can be included in commercial auto insurance. Basically, its job is to repair or replace your horse trailer in case of damage or destruction caused by theft, vandalism, vehicular accidents, lightning, weather, and other covered perils. The payout you’ll receive will be equal to the current resale value of the horse trailer before it got damaged.

Say what if the horse trailer isn’t running on the road or attached to a vehicle? Will commercial auto insurance cover costs? In most cases, the answer to this question is no. This is why you need general liability insurance.
General liability insurance will cover claims for bodily injury or property damage if an accident happens under circumstances outside of the scope of commercial auto insurance. Here are some examples:
You parked your horse trailer on the side of the road. You didn’t place an early warning device. A cyclist crashes to it and sustains injuries
Kids are playing in your horse trailer. One of them falls from the platform. The parents demand compensation for the child’s medical treatment
You rented your trailer to another horse farm. It suddenly got defective and caused an accident
Yes. General liability insurance can be added with tools and equipment coverage or inland marine endorsement. This allows the policy to grant a reimbursement, albeit very limited, if your horse trailer is damaged or destroyed due to theft, vandalism, or vehicular accidents.

A tools and equipment insurance grants coverage if your horse trailer gets damaged or destroyed while it’s stationary or attached to a vehicle. This will reimburse the repair or replacement of your horse trailer if it gets damaged due to fire, theft, vandalism, operator error, or sudden defects.
Policy limits range between $10,000-$50,000 or more. In some cases, insurance companies decide the amount of coverage you’ll receive based on how much money it will take you to replace or repair the horse trailer.

Commercial property insurance is usually used to cover buildings such as barns, offices, and facilities. However, you’ll be surprised that this can also be used as a horse trailer insurance coverage.
You must be asking why, and here’s the answer. Commercial property insurance comes with contents coverage*. This contents coverage allows commercial property insurance to not only cover the building but also anything within its premises. Here are some situations where this can apply:
A fire engulfs your horse boarding facility and the horse trailers in the garage or got damaged or destroyed
Thieves break into a building you are insured with commercial property insurance. They successfully managed to steal the horse trailer kept inside
Contents coverage will grant a reimbursement based on the estimated value of the horse trailer that got damaged or destroyed because of an incident included in the terms of commercial property insurance.

You can bundle your general liability insurance and commercial property insurance into a business owner’s policy. In a nutshell, you can use this insurance to simultaneously:
Cover the bodily injuries or property damage caused by your horse trailer
Reimburse the value of the horse trailer and the building where it’s stored
Getting this insurance is smart if you want to get two types of coverage without spending much. Purchase a business owner’s policy and you’ll enjoy a 5%-10% discount or more depending on which insurance company you work with.
Say what if you need to relocate to another area and the horse trailer you own needs to be hauled through a truck? How do you protect your precious equipment in this case?
The solution is inland marine insurance. Inland marine insurance is a type of property insurance product that will reimburse the value of the horse trailer if it gets damaged or destroyed during the trip due to:
Accidental unloading
Negligence of the shipping carrier
Upset
Vandalism
Theft
Lightning
Malicious mischief
Trailer interchange insurance allows you to cover the repair or replacement of trailers that were leased, rented, or borrowed under a trailer interchange agreement. You can purchase this as a stand-alone policy or as an add-on to commercial auto insurance.
Experiencing a breakdown is distressing enough. While you might access equine trailer breakdown assistance, these services can be costly, especially if the trailer fails outside regular business hours.
A horse trailer breakdown cover takes care of repair and replacement expenses after breaking down.
Besides covering the mechanical failures and towing costs, horse trailer insurance and breakdown cover protects you in other events, including:
Emergency expenses – Sometimes your trailer may fail in the middle of nowhere; in such a case, your horse trailer insurance will cover the expenses of emergency accommodation or transportation for you and your horse.
Roadside assistance – Roadside assistance coverage takes care of the costs for tire replacement and tire repair. This even acts as a horse trailer towing insurance that reimburses the cost of towing services if you need to take the horse trailer to a repair shop after it breaks down
Note that horse trailer breakdown insurance doesn’t cover a horse trailer you borrowed. In the same way, you can’t use this insurance to take care of expenses if your horse trailer breaks down while being used by another person.
There are insurance endorsements that can be used for horse transport insurance. Particularly, deck collapse coverage, livestock transit coverage, limited livestock transit coverage, and carcass removal coverage.
Livestock transit coverage is a type of commercial horse transport insurance that is underwritten as an all-risk policy. This means that it can cover all of the common accidents that might happen while horses are loaded, transported, and unloaded from your horse trailer.
Limited livestock transit coverage is a less comprehensive version of livestock transit coverage. This only covers the perils you list on its terms. Those you willfully or accidentally exclude aren’t covered.
It’s rare for the deck of your horse trailer to collapse due to the sheer weight of its load. But if this occurs, you will sustain hefty financial losses. Insurance companies cover this exposure through deck collapse coverage.
Of course, you’ll need a horse transport business insurance that will cover the cost of removing the bodies of dead horses from the road in case of a devastating vehicular accident. This is where carcass removal coverage comes in. This will reimburse what you spent on carcass removal services. Cleanup costs might also be covered.

This place is an absolute joke of a company and should be ashamed of the way they conduct business. I was hurt on the job at the end of July and it took them just shy of 7 weeks to issue out a paycheck to me. Yes the amount was back dated but still. Not many have the luxury of not receiving a paycheck for almost 2 months. To top it all off, the original adjuster marked me down for the wrong state which caused a problem from the get go, I've had 3 different adjusters now since each one can't seem to figure out the simplicity of my claim. All my paperwork which includes, my job, house, and drs visits all are from the same state and city but yet some how I have been filed under a completely different state 1500 miles away. They do not answer your phone calls or emails no matter how many you leave. I've had to escalate my frustrations to the supervisors of each of these individuals in order to even get some kind of response. I've had more communication and information given to me about my claim from the customer service representatives then the actual adjusters.......... please tell me how that works?! A serious overhaul needs to happen here in order to serve your clients the way they deserve to be taken care of. 10/10 do not recommend this company to a single soul on earth
I have never had the displeasure of working with a more incompetent and disrespectful person in my life. I’m an injured worker and the adjuster that was assigned to my case was named Carrie Furgeson. In the past 6 weeks that I’ve been injured and out of work I have only been able to get ahold of her twice, not for lack of trying. I have left countless voicemails, countless emails, and she ignores them all. When I am finally able to get ahold of her I’m greeted with terrible customer service. She is rude, she talks over me and I’m hardly able to get a word in edgewise. She spelled my name wrong on my documents even after I spelled it for her properly countless times, this caused a whole new issue with my bank. I have bill collectors from the hospital calling me demanding payment and Carrie Furgeson won’t do a single thing to help, or to get them paid. All of my documentation is in Colorado, my job is in Colorado, my address is in Colorado, all my Dr offices and appointments have been in Colorado and Carrie still managed to hold my claim because she wasn’t sure what state she needed to file it under. It’s been 6 weeks since my Injury and my company still hasn’t received the wage paperwork to fill out so they can get me my correct wages. When she’s not ignoring me she’s answering my questions with “I don’t know” well I don’t know how she got this job, because apparently she doesn’t know anything about it. She is a disgusting morose individual inside and out and I genuinely wish her the worst in all of her future endeavors. I highly recommend you don’t use this company. Please if you are a business owner and your looking into this company please don’t use them. I’m sure they have the cheapest payment and that’s why companies use them in the first place, but you will be doing your employees a grave disservice by forcing them to venture into this absolute dumpster fire of a company. I would rate 0/5 if possible but 1 was the lowest I was allowed.
