eBay was the world’s second most visited eCommerce marketplace in 2022. The popularity of the platform has led many to start selling and finding success. However, 10% of all packages disappear without explanation in major US cities. This is just one of the many challenges that eBay sellers face.
Just like selling in Amazon, insurance might be a requirement for selling on eBay safely. A successful business strategy for starting eBay sellers is a comprehensive insurance policy that can protect them from many different kinds of liability. In this article, we will talk about ebay seller insurance.
eBay and the transport services it uses offers shipping insurance that can cover packages that sellers send out. Below is a breakdown of the different coverages offered.
USPS | UPS | FedEx | ShipCover |

eBay liability insurance with general liability coverage grants the policyholder protection from third-party injuries and property damage. Some situations where this policy can be helpful include:
A member of the public wanders onto your business property and gets injured, filing a lawsuit
A product that you send out causes a customer injury
A customer accuses you of slander based on disparaging remarks you make
General liability policies can be complemented by other policies to get coverage for more incidents. Here are some of the common add-ons to the policy:
Tools and equipment–Protects your business tools when they are damaged, lost, or stolen
HNOA coverage–Hired/non-owned auto liability coverage accounts for the costs of accidents caused by a vehicle you hired or borrowed for business purposes
General liability policies have a coverage limit of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. This limit will be different depending on the cost of your policy and what your insurer provides.
No, you will not be legally required to purchase general liability insurance for your eBay
business. However, some customers or clients may want you to provide proof of liability insurance to do business with you. If you want to apply for a professional license for your business, you may need to provide proof of general liability.
Yes, general liability insurance will have policy periods that cover incidents, claims, and lawsuits. Your coverage will only last for an agreed time period, which can create a lapse in coverage if you fail to renew if the policy expires.
General liability policy benefits trigger based on the type of policy you have. A per-occurrence policy makes an incident of injury or damage the trigger for coverage. If this incident occurred under the policy period, you will get coverage.
A claims-made policy is another way for benefits to trigger. This allows coverage to trigger only when a claim is made. This means that if you file a claim outside the policy period, it may not get covered. In a case like this, you might want to purchase an extension add-on that lets you get a longer time to report your claims.

Another type of eBay business insurance is professional liability insurance coverage. This protects your business from lawsuits and liabilities stemming from mistakes, errors, or negligence you make in your business practices or operations. Example situations include:
You fail to deliver an item promised to a buyer that causes them to lose money and seek damages
You make an oversight in your business that causes financial damage to a client
The coverage limit for professional liability for eBay sellers will vary between $500,000 per occurrence and $1 million aggregate. Other limits are available as well. You will want to speak to your insurer if you have a specific limit in mind.
Professional liability will not typically cover business property damage, commercial vehicles, employee injuries, and employment discrimination lawsuits. You will want to purchase additional coverage for your business if you want these perils covered.
While this policy is not legally required, you may need insurance coverage to protect your business from financial ruin resulting from a costly legal suit. As an eBay seller, you will make lots of business decisions, and it's only a matter of time before you make a mistake that costs you money.

Tools and equipment insurance is a policy that protects your business equipment from physical damage and theft, even when they are off your business premises. Here are some situations where this policy can be useful:
While traveling to get more products to sell in your store, your laptop gets stolen by a criminal
One of your shipping tools gets damaged from a fire that started in your workplace
Equipment breakdown–Helps minimize your business downtime by covering the costs associated with repairing or replacing damaged equipment
Inland marine insurance–Protects your tools when they are transported on land by a vehicle like a truck or a train
Tools and equipment insurance has an average coverage limit between $3,000 and $25,000. The limits will change based on the policy and company.
Depends on the policy. A typical deductible for tools and equipment insurance can be around $500.

Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles that you use for business-related purposes. Some coverage situations include:
While driving your car to pick up an item to sell, you get into an accident
During business operations, your car gets stolen by a thief
Your commercial auto policy is comprised of several standard policy protections, including:
Collision–Protects your business against financial losses that originate from damage to your vehicle when it gets into an accident
Comprehensive–Covers your vehicle for physical damage from covered events besides accidents. Typical situations are things like theft, vandalism, or fires
Auto liability–Provides protection when you are found liable for damage to someone else or their property because commercial auto crashed

If you finance or lease your business vehicle, Gap coverage can help you pay off the remaining loan or lease period if your vehicle gets totaled. This is an add-on to commercial auto insurance.
Workers' compensation insurance protects your employees when they get injured and cannot work because of their job activities. Example situations include:
One of your workers injures their back while moving a product to sell on eBay
A worker contracts a chronic condition like carpal tunnel syndrome on this job that reduces their ability to work

Use anyone except Employers. Period. They are non-transparent and shameful. After I complained long enough to warrant a call from a supervisor, the supervisor called back from a PRIVATE NUMBER (no caller ID), left a message that they are not reversing their decision (without any communication with me), and failed to leave a phone number for me to call back. She was hiding! They also fact find via email and phone calls, which is terrific for speed and communication. However, after setting a precedence of email or phone calls, they send time sensitive information via email, without any heads up... they are hoping you miss it and forfeit via expiration. Evil policies. Go elsewhere.
This place is an absolute joke of a company and should be ashamed of the way they conduct business. I was hurt on the job at the end of July and it took them just shy of 7 weeks to issue out a paycheck to me. Yes the amount was back dated but still. Not many have the luxury of not receiving a paycheck for almost 2 months. To top it all off, the original adjuster marked me down for the wrong state which caused a problem from the get go, I've had 3 different adjusters now since each one can't seem to figure out the simplicity of my claim. All my paperwork which includes, my job, house, and drs visits all are from the same state and city but yet some how I have been filed under a completely different state 1500 miles away. They do not answer your phone calls or emails no matter how many you leave. I've had to escalate my frustrations to the supervisors of each of these individuals in order to even get some kind of response. I've had more communication and information given to me about my claim from the customer service representatives then the actual adjusters.......... please tell me how that works?! A serious overhaul needs to happen here in order to serve your clients the way they deserve to be taken care of. 10/10 do not recommend this company to a single soul on earth
I have never had the displeasure of working with a more incompetent and disrespectful person in my life. I’m an injured worker and the adjuster that was assigned to my case was named Carrie Furgeson. In the past 6 weeks that I’ve been injured and out of work I have only been able to get ahold of her twice, not for lack of trying. I have left countless voicemails, countless emails, and she ignores them all. When I am finally able to get ahold of her I’m greeted with terrible customer service. She is rude, she talks over me and I’m hardly able to get a word in edgewise. She spelled my name wrong on my documents even after I spelled it for her properly countless times, this caused a whole new issue with my bank. I have bill collectors from the hospital calling me demanding payment and Carrie Furgeson won’t do a single thing to help, or to get them paid. All of my documentation is in Colorado, my job is in Colorado, my address is in Colorado, all my Dr offices and appointments have been in Colorado and Carrie still managed to hold my claim because she wasn’t sure what state she needed to file it under. It’s been 6 weeks since my Injury and my company still hasn’t received the wage paperwork to fill out so they can get me my correct wages. When she’s not ignoring me she’s answering my questions with “I don’t know” well I don’t know how she got this job, because apparently she doesn’t know anything about it. She is a disgusting morose individual inside and out and I genuinely wish her the worst in all of her future endeavors. I highly recommend you don’t use this company. Please if you are a business owner and your looking into this company please don’t use them. I’m sure they have the cheapest payment and that’s why companies use them in the first place, but you will be doing your employees a grave disservice by forcing them to venture into this absolute dumpster fire of a company. I would rate 0/5 if possible but 1 was the lowest I was allowed.
