Commercial auto insurance is crucial if you own a business in South Carolina that relies on vehicles for operations. Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles used for business purposes, protecting you from financial loss in case of accidents, theft, or other incidents. In this article, we'll explore the various aspects of commercial auto insurance in South Carolina, including requirements, coverage components, costs, and the best insurance companies to consider.
Commercial auto insurance is a type of insurance plan that aids in protecting cars, trucks, and vans used for business purposes. Both vehicle damage and driver injuries are covered. Commercial vehicles need a different policy because they frequently face more significant risks than personal vehicles.
Business vehicles are covered by commercial auto insurance for things like damage to your vehicle or vehicles, driver injury, injury to another person, and damage to someone else's property. Because business vehicles require more protection in the event of an accident, commercial auto policies typically have higher coverage limits than personal policies.
Commercial auto insurance provides liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments (or personal injury protection), and uninsured motorist coverage, much like your auto insurance policy does.

Auto accident statistics in South Carolina provide insights into the frequency, causes, and impacts of accidents in the state. These are some of the statistics based on the causes.
Total Accidents: 2019 South Carolina recorded 1,036 fatal crashes, resulting in 1,090 fatalities. Additionally, there were approximately 60,000 reported crashes with injuries and over 110,000 reported crashes with property damage only.
Fatality Rates: South Carolina has consistently had a higher fatality rate than the national average. The state's fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) was 1.75 in 2019, while the national average was 1.11.
Contributing Factors: Some common contributing factors to auto accidents in South Carolina include speeding, distracted driving (e.g., cell phone use), impaired driving (alcohol or drugs), failure to yield, and aggressive driving behaviors.
Rural vs. Urban: Rural areas of South Carolina tend to have higher rates of fatal accidents due to higher speed limits, limited access to emergency medical services, and more hazardous road conditions.
Seat Belt Usage: Seat belt usage significantly reduces the severity of accident injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the observed seat belt usage rate in South Carolina was around 94% in 2019, slightly below the national average.
South Carolina state law requires a minimum liability limit of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident for physical injury, and $25,000 for property damage (i.e., 25/50/25) for all commercial auto plans. This implies that if you or one of your drivers causes an accident, your commercial vehicle insurance coverage will cover up to $25,000 in medical expenses for any one person's injuries and up to $50,000 for all parties' injuries. It would also pay up to $25,000 if another person's property was damaged.
All commercial auto insurance policies in South Carolina must also include uninsured motorist coverage and these liability limitations. If one of your drivers or passengers is hurt in an accident caused by an underinsured or uninsured motorist, this policy is intended to safeguard your company. This insurance would assist in covering the medical costs and other damages that the at-fault driver's insurance would have covered if they had been protected.
Businesses operating in South Carolina that own or utilize vehicles must adhere to certain regulations. A local independent insurance agent can assist you in locating a highly rated, yet reasonably cost, policy that complies with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
Commercial auto insurance policies typically include several components to provide comprehensive coverage. These components may include:
Uninsured motorist insurance–This coverage is designed to protect your business if one of your drivers or passengers is injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. In such a case, this coverage would help pay for medical expenses and other damages that the at-fault driver's insurance would have covered if they had been insured
Liability coverage–Liability coverage is a fundamental component of commercial auto insurance. It provides financial protection if your business vehicle is involved in an accident that results in bodily injury or property damage to others. Suppose you or one of your drivers is found at fault for the accident. In that case, liability coverage helps cover the medical expenses, property repairs, and legal costs associated with the injuries or damages caused
Collision–Collision coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle if you're in an accident with another vehicle or object. This coverage applies regardless of who is at fault in the accident
Comprehensive–Comprehensive coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle from non-collision events such as theft, vandalism, or natural disasters. For example, if a tree falls on your vehicle during a storm, comprehensive coverage would help pay for the repairs
Medical payments (or personal injury protection)–This coverage helps pay for medical expenses if you or your passengers are injured in an accident. It can also help cover lost wages and other related expenses
Uninsured motorists coverage–This coverage helps protect you if you're in an accident with an uninsured driver. It could help pay for damages and injuries that the at-fault driver's insurance would have covered if they had been insured
In addition to the standard coverage components, you can customize your commercial auto insurance policy with various add-ons to meet the specific needs of your business. Some common add-ons include:
Rental reimbursement–Covers the cost of renting a replacement vehicle while your business vehicle is being repaired after an accident
Non-owned vehicle coverage–Extends coverage to vehicles your business uses but doesn't own, such as rented or employee-owned vehicles
Hired auto coverage–Provides coverage for vehicles your business leases, hires, or borrows for business purposes
Premiums for commercial auto insurance South Carolina are $45 per month or $540 per year for a $1 million auto liability coverage. Factors that affect premiums are:
The number of vehicles you are insuring–The more vehicles you are insuring, the higher your overall cost will be. However, some insurance companies may offer discounts for insuring multiple vehicles
The types of vehicles you are insuring–Different vehicles have different risk levels. For example, a large commercial truck may have a higher premium than a small cargo van because it has the potential to cause more damage in an accident
The estimated number of miles each vehicle will be driven per year–The more miles a vehicle drives, the higher the risk of an accident. Insurance companies take this into account when calculating your premium
Whether the vehicles will be used locally or for interstate commerce– Vehicles used for interstate commerce may have higher premiums because they are exposed to more risk by traveling longer distances and across state lines
The driving records of any employees operating the vehicles–Drivers with clean driving records are considered lower risk and may receive lower premiums than drivers with a history of accidents or traffic violations
How much liability coverage you wish to purchase–The higher your liability coverage limits, the more your insurance will cost. However, having higher limits can provide greater financial protection in the event of an accident
The amount of your deductible–Your deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in. Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium, but it also means you’ll pay more out-of-pocket if you need to file a claim

This place is an absolute joke of a company and should be ashamed of the way they conduct business. I was hurt on the job at the end of July and it took them just shy of 7 weeks to issue out a paycheck to me. Yes the amount was back dated but still. Not many have the luxury of not receiving a paycheck for almost 2 months. To top it all off, the original adjuster marked me down for the wrong state which caused a problem from the get go, I've had 3 different adjusters now since each one can't seem to figure out the simplicity of my claim. All my paperwork which includes, my job, house, and drs visits all are from the same state and city but yet some how I have been filed under a completely different state 1500 miles away. They do not answer your phone calls or emails no matter how many you leave. I've had to escalate my frustrations to the supervisors of each of these individuals in order to even get some kind of response. I've had more communication and information given to me about my claim from the customer service representatives then the actual adjusters.......... please tell me how that works?! A serious overhaul needs to happen here in order to serve your clients the way they deserve to be taken care of. 10/10 do not recommend this company to a single soul on earth
I have never had the displeasure of working with a more incompetent and disrespectful person in my life. I’m an injured worker and the adjuster that was assigned to my case was named Carrie Furgeson. In the past 6 weeks that I’ve been injured and out of work I have only been able to get ahold of her twice, not for lack of trying. I have left countless voicemails, countless emails, and she ignores them all. When I am finally able to get ahold of her I’m greeted with terrible customer service. She is rude, she talks over me and I’m hardly able to get a word in edgewise. She spelled my name wrong on my documents even after I spelled it for her properly countless times, this caused a whole new issue with my bank. I have bill collectors from the hospital calling me demanding payment and Carrie Furgeson won’t do a single thing to help, or to get them paid. All of my documentation is in Colorado, my job is in Colorado, my address is in Colorado, all my Dr offices and appointments have been in Colorado and Carrie still managed to hold my claim because she wasn’t sure what state she needed to file it under. It’s been 6 weeks since my Injury and my company still hasn’t received the wage paperwork to fill out so they can get me my correct wages. When she’s not ignoring me she’s answering my questions with “I don’t know” well I don’t know how she got this job, because apparently she doesn’t know anything about it. She is a disgusting morose individual inside and out and I genuinely wish her the worst in all of her future endeavors. I highly recommend you don’t use this company. Please if you are a business owner and your looking into this company please don’t use them. I’m sure they have the cheapest payment and that’s why companies use them in the first place, but you will be doing your employees a grave disservice by forcing them to venture into this absolute dumpster fire of a company. I would rate 0/5 if possible but 1 was the lowest I was allowed.
